Puerto Lumbreras

Puerto Lumbreras is also known as the city of services whose name translates literally as the "Port of Lights".  It is located to the far west of Murcia province on the E15/A7 motorway at 12km from Lorca (travelling towards Almeria). The port element signifies the first main town into another province within Spain, albeit land locked. Puerto Lumbreras is spread around the base of a hill, which is crowned by an old castle and the town centre has an interesting Parador which may not be the most architecturally appealing on the outside but inside is an attractive and comfortable environment offering excellent food and service.

Puerto Lumbreras is a modern, airy clean town with wide streets, many of which are pedestrianised in the centre yet it still retains the important elements of the traditional spanish lifestyle (for instance it still honours the siesta) . It offers every facility you could need along with a wide selection of restaurants and leisure facilities (as well as martial arts, reiki, massage yoga etc) There is a huge “urgencias” (24 hour medical centre) and the local hospital is just a 12 minute drive away (towards Lorca, the Hospital Rafael Mendez). The view above shows the rambla which divides the town and is now used for the market and as a car park. The Ayuntamiento (town hall) of Puerto Lumbreras has recently done a lot of improvement works to both the road network and to pedestrian areas.  Much of the centre of the town now has vehicle free, tree-lined pavements, some of which are cobbled.  Parking can be found a short distance away or in the Rambla de Nogalte (the wide, walled, dried up river bed).  Development is taking place in a few key areas, towards the coast Esparragal and Estacion (where plots are normally 5000m2 in size to conform to planning regulations) and towards Granada in an area known as Casarejos and Henares located a short distance along the A92 Granada motorway towards Velez Rubio (where plots are normally a minimum of 20000m2, to conform with planning and development law).
