Information about Lorca
The Lorca area is diverse ranging from the thriving cosmopolitan centre to centuries old inland agricultural areas where the traditional way of life is conserved. Aguilas is a centuries old port and also now offers a wide range of sporting and nautical pursuits with a new marina and leisure area under development. Aguilas is also famous for its stunning and exhilarating carnival every February, something not to be missed.
Its municipal zone reaches as far as the coast and it is the largest district within the region of Murcia. It is a significant and influential city, both today and in spanish history (as a christian stronghold against the Moors in Granada). It is located less than 30 minutes inland from the thriving port of Aguilas in Murcia on the south east corner of Spain. Surrounding Aguilas in both directions are numerous unspoilt coves and relatively undiscovered beaches.
Property of interest to international buyers in and around Lorca tends to differ according to which side of the coastal motorway it is located. As a loose rule of thumb, land on the coastal side of the motorway tends to be 5000m in size and normally flat (with some 20000m2 plots) whereas plots and new villa builds on the inland side of the motorway are almost inevitably 20000m2 or larger. Most owners of the larger plots simply enclose an area of 1000 to 2000m2 sufficient for terraces, garden and pool etc. while the rest stays au natural thus maintaining the spanish countryside. Cortijos and re-sale properties may have varying sizes of land and still be perfectly legal.
Lorca offers a wide range of restaurants, hotels, leisure facilities and cosmopolitan living all beneath the famous 13th century hill top castle which overlooks the entire area. It is set in an expansive valley between the mountains and has many historical buildings including churches, Roman villas, palaces amongst others. Lorca is well known for its love of cultural life and its passionate and lavish fiestas. It is easily accessible with a coach station, a railway station and the main A7/E15 motorway that runs next to the city within easy reach of the following airports (120km from Alicante airport, 150km from Almeria airport and 60km from Murcia’s airport at San Javier). The new international airport at Corvera (which Ryanair and Easyjet will be flying in to) will be the closest. This is due to open 2009-10. Consequently buying property in Lorca represents a good investment as prices are sure to rise once this airport is operational. There are 2 new golf courses under construction one of which is the Lorca Golf resort on the dual carriageway towards Aguilas but other existing courses within easy reach are Hacienda del Alamo (Fuente Alamo) and those in the neighbouring province of Almeria, notably Valle del Este and Desert Springs, approximately 35minutes drive away.
